Review: Lost Souls

Lost Souls
Lost Souls by Delilah Devlin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Enjoyable book. We see more or Cait and Sam rather than a new couple as many sequels do. There is an interesting dynamic between Cait & Sam, her ex-partner and ex-husband. And Lost Souls moved their new, after divorce, relationship further towards possible reconciliation and we saw more of Sam's motivations.

The new "full-moon case" they had was a doozy and not something I had ever read before. It is kind of nice reading something other than weres and vamps.

Review: Dire Desires

Dire Desires
Dire Desires by Stephanie Tyler

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really like the world the Dire Wolves live in but the writing style of the Dire books drives me nuts. I felt like I was being told everything that was going on instead actually seeing it, if that makes sense. Once I got past the 1st half of the books either I got used to it or the style changed because the last half was better than the first.

I love the Sydney Croft books (with Larissa Ione) and I enjoyed Tyler's SEAL books so I can't figure out why the Dire books bug me so much.

Review: True Love

True Love
True Love by Jude Deveraux

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

How lucky can a girl get, three really great books in a week. Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall, this one and Forgotten Sins by Rebecca Zanetti (review coming up.)

I loved this book. It started out just a little slow as I got used the the author's writing style but once I got into it I couldn't put it down.

I have to admit here that I'm a Montgomery / Taggart family fan from way back when and that might have influenced my opinion a little but only a little.

Technically this is the first in a new series called Nantucket Brides. Hero is "new generation" Montgomery and various Montgomerys & Taggarts make a well thought out appearance.

I really enjoyed visiting Nantucket and feel like i could find my way around were I to visit, and this book really makes me want to visit.

The interaction of the characters seemed very realistic and held true throughout the book.

This one is defiantly on the list for a reread right before the next one comes out, whenever that is, I've been unable to find that info which is driving me crazy.

I enjoy this series but the stories are so short and almost always end on a bit of a cliffhanger which is getting a little annoying.

Monday's Featured Set - Maggie Osborne backlist bundle

Maggie Osborne backlist bundle

Not connected by characters.
Brides of Prairie Gold - The twelve women from Chastity, Missouri, meant trouble for wagon master Cody Snow. He was used to transporting guns and whiskey, not mail-order brides. Then he looked into the beautiful, defiant eyes of Perrin Waverly, a woman who had a past as painful as his own.
Silver Lining - When Low Down single-handedly saves the mining town of Piney Creek from the pox, the surviving men promise her whatever she desires in gratitude for her heroism. But when Low Down asks for a baby of her own, the miners are forced to draw lots to decide who has the dubious honor of marrying this courageous but unrefined woman.
I Do, I Do, I Do - The tale of three women who discover by accident that they are married to the same man. Jean Jacques Villette is just a guy who can't say no; he's also the thief who stole their money as well as their hearts.
The Bride of Willow Creek - Ten years ago Angie Bartoli eloped with Sam Holland. But before their impetuous marriage even began, they were torn apart by chance. For Angie, the gold band on her finger is a constant reminder of the man she could never forget.
Prairie Moon - Living on a run-down farm at the edge of a small Texas town, Della Ward is haunted by the bittersweet life she once lived with an adoring husband who died too soon. Once a laughing, carefree soul, Della is now a widow with only guilty memories for company. Until the day she sees a rugged stranger riding across the prairie toward her house.
Foxfire Bride - Fox is a woman as feisty as they come. Once the most sought-after scout west of the Rockies, she led folks through wild, unexplored terrain - until a gunshot wound ended her guiding career. She's living a calmer life when a handsome stranger appears with an urgent request to take him to Denver immediately.

2176 series by Susan Grant; Kathleen Nance; Liz Maverick; Patti O'Shea - Friday's Feature

Legend of Banzai Maguire ~ Day of Fire ~ Shadow Runners ~ Power of Two ~ Scarlet Empress
Susan Grant; Kathleen Nance; Liz Maverick; Patti O'Shea

In the 21st and 22nd Centuries, the United States changed and grew. Now the United Colonies of Earth dominate the globe. But a mysterious voice is broadcasting treason, inciting revolution and referring to the "ideals of 1776" - and to an enigmatic figure named Banzai Maguire.

THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE - The year: 2006. The mission: routine. Or so U. S. A. F. Pilot Bree "Banzai" Maguire thinks. Then she's shot down over enemy airspace, captured and put in bio-stasis. When she wakes, everything's changed. It's one hundred and seventy years later. 2176: the world is in crisis, and Banzai's a hotly contested prize. Once, her job was to protect democracy; now a mysterious voice claims she must bring it back.
DAY OF FIRE - Canada: For over a century it's been closed off, quarantined. Now, in 2176, its people thrive. The country still needs peacekeepers, though - and the Mounties are there. "Be It All. Do It All." Those are the high-tech police force's twin mottos. They're Day Daniels's mottos, too.
THE SHADOW RUNNERS - Newgate, Australia: In the 22nd century, history repeats itself. Part penal colony, part dumping ground for toxic waste, the land is controlled by "the Parliament," a gang of dissipated self-styled aristocrats. To survive here, you have to know the tricks. Like Jenny Red. She's been Down and made it out to tell the tale.
THE POWER OF TWO - To find Banzai, the UCE assigns Cai. She's the "anchor," the techie half of a Quandem: a pair of elite operatives intended for just such covert action. Neural implants allow her to sit back in a control chair and feed information to her partner, the dark-souled Jacob Tucker.
THE SCARLET EMPRESS - Shot down over Korea, modern-day U. S. A. F. Fighter pilot Cameron "Scarlet" Tucker is put in bio-stasis. She wakes 170 years later to find her best friend survived, too - the "legendary" Banzai Maguire is being held for treason in the country that was once her beloved United States.

Friday's Feature - The Fates by Kristine Grayson

The Fates by Kristine Grayson (Katherine Kristine Rusch)

What happened to Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming after the Happily Ever After? Find out in Utterly Charming & Thoroughly Kissed. See what other fairy tale characters appear in the books of the Fairy Tale Romances series (The Fates.)

Utterly Charming - From the diary of Nora Barr. I can't believe the day I've had. Just when I finally get a client, he turns out to be a nut case! Not only has he been arrested for torching a neighborhood, but he also claims to be the magician who knocked out the Sleeping Beauty a thousand years ago!
Thoroughly Kissed - Emma awakens to an entirely different world than the one she lived in a thousand years ago, and although she's the real Sleeping Beauty, her life is no fairy tale. After parting ways with her supposed Prince Charming, she's determined to be a normal girl.
Completely Smitten - My name is Andrew Vari, and I'm short (very short), and not exactly handsome. Actually, that's only partly true. My real name is Darius, and if you caught a glimpse of my true form, you might just swoon. It was my arrogance about my looks and magical powers that got me into this fix.
Simply Irresistible - My name's Vivian Kinneally, and I can't believe this is happening to me. I just moved here to Portland, Oregon, to take over a business left to me by my favorite aunt - nothing earth-shattering... or so you'd think, right? I've always been a little bit psychic - but my powers never hinted at what was to come when I let three gorgeous, terrified women into my home.
Absolutely Captivated - The name's Sinclair. Zoe Sinclair, P.I. My stomping grounds are the neon-lit streets of Las Vegas, where anything can happen. In my half century here, I've seen plenty. Now might be a good time to mention that I'm a 150-year-old mage, though I don't look a day over thirty.
Totally Spellbound - L.A. psychologist Megan Kineally has always had her feet planted firmly on the ground, which is more than she can say for her pampered clients. So she has to wonder what she's now doing hanging around in Vegas with her brother, Travers, his mysterious new fiancée, his son, Kyle, and three loopy women who call themselves The Fates.

Review: Whistling Past the Graveyard

Whistling Past the Graveyard
Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a fabulous book. I have always really enjoyed everything Crandall has written so I automatically added this one to my list without even looking to see what it was about. After I got it and looked at the synopsis I was surprised and not sure I would enjoy it. I read the first page and was even more unsure.

Boy, was I wrong.

I read in one sitting and frankly, couldn't put it down.

Crandall does a wonderful job bringing Starla to life. Starla is a nine-year-old growing up in Mississippi in 1963. She lives with her grandmother while her mother is becoming a country music star in Nashville and her father works on a oil rig in the gulf. She has the normal dreams of wanting to live with both her parents and when she runs away decides that she will go to her mother and then her father will come and they will live happily ever after. Not surprisingly, it's not that easy.

Maggie Shayne's Wings in the Night, Wednesday's Feature

Wings in the Night by Maggie Shayne

I loved this series. In fact, I wanted to read the first three books so badly that I ordered the 3-in-1 anthology from Australia as a present for myself.

First three were from the short-lived Silhouette Shadows line and were some of the few that had Vampires back when you didn't find vampires in every other book you picked up.

Wings in the Night: For centuries, loneliness has haunted them from dusk till dawn. Yet now, from out of the darkness, shines the light of eternal life... Eternal love.

How could he deny himself a future with her in this land of desire and delight where even the wildest dreams could become reality?

Her mission is to save Earth from a future plot to destroy it.

Imperium by Kathleen Morgan
Heart's Surrender ~ Knowing Crystal ~ Crystal Fire ~ Firestar ~ Heart's Lair ~ Firestorm

It has been quite a few years since I've read this series and it must have been before Byron because I know I read one of the last ones first. I remember thinking when I read the last page, there have to be other books about these characters and went on a hunt. It was a lot harder to track down connected books back then.

To my mind this series had it all, outer space, other planets, and Cat People!
